The Sarah Greene 2010 Breakthrough Tribute Fund

SARAH GREENE BREAKTHROUGH TRIBUTE FUND CYCLE RIDE ACROSS IRELAND – GALWAY TO DUBLIN 2ND TO 4TH SEPTEMBER 2010

Sarah died in December 2006 after an amazingly brave 2 year struggle with Triple Negative Breast Cancer. We did not want this to be the end, and so the Sarah Greene Breakthrough Tribute Fund was established.

WE MADE IT - 57 CYCLISTS WEST TO EAST, 250 MILES. 3 DAYS, HUGE CLIMBS. GREAT CAMARADERIE, A WONDERFUL SUPPORT TEAM, SUN, HEADWIND, RAIN, PAIN ALL ROUND, IRISH HOOLEY IN DUBLIN, GUINNESS GALORE & SMILES OF ACHIEVEMENT ALL ROUND- £200,000 RAISED SO FAR!!

SO FAR AN ADDITIONAL £32,399.00 WILL BE ADDED TO THE TOTAL ABOVE FROM GIFT AID DONATIONS

WHY?
To raise £400,000 to fund the new SARAH GREENE CLINICAL RESEARCH FELLOW, Dr Sheeba Irshad, at the inspiring Breakthrough Research Unit at Guy’s Hospital/Kings College. Sheeba started her new post this week while we were on the ride.

Prof Paul Ellis, one of the world’s leading oncologists who treated Sarah Greene during her illness says
“On behalf of everyone at the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Research unit at Guy’s Hospital/Kings College we thank you for the energy and commitment you have shown in raising money in Sarah Greene’s name. The Bike ride through Ireland will be exhausting but also exhilarating and loads of fun. I can assure you that every pound raised goes directly to our Unit."

"I AM NORMALLY CAUTIOUS ABOUT MAKING GRAND STATEMENTS BUT IN THIS CASE IT IS NOT AN EXAGGERATION TO SAY THAT THE TREATMENT OF TRIPLE NEGATIVE BREAST CANCER IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF A REVOLUTION AND OUR UNIT (WITH ALL YOU SPONSORS WITH US) IS RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF IT” (see more below)

ALL OUR THANKS & CONGRATULATIONS TO CHARLIE BARRETT, JAN BOOST, RORY PENN AND JAMIE TAYLOR who completed a staggering 10 Marathons in 6 days in 56 hours and 48 minutes across the Jordanian desert in March and have raised over £68,000 towards our target.

Thanks to the amazing support of our friends and supporters, the cycle ride to Paris in 2008 raised over £350,000 and we funded the Sarah Greene Research Fellow. Dr Elodie Noel, was appointed in this post at the inspirational Research Unit based at Guy’s Hospital, Kings College London.

Every rider has paid for their own expedition costs which means unlike most charities ALL THE MONEY RAISED GOES DIRECTLY to the Triple Negative Breast Cancer unit at Guy’s Hospital, Kings College London. You can therefore visibly see how your money is doing real and immediate good.

We hope that you will be inspired to support us in this almighty challenge in the knowledge it will create a difference for women with breast cancer worldwide.

Prof Paul Ellis also says:
“I thought it would help to give you an insight into just how exciting and dynamic this area of research is at the moment. Triple Negative breast cancer is so called because it doesn't have any of the 3 common breast cancer "targets" on the outside of the cell. This makes it a more aggressive type of breast cancer than some others and harder to treat because we haven't had these specific "targeted" therapies to use against it. Our unit is one of a small number of leading international units to be specifically searching for these targets. We have been successful in undertaking some of the basic research work that has led to the development of a brand new type of drug therapy called the PARP inhibitors. Head of Research at the Unit Dr Andy Tutt and I have been asked to lead a large European trial that will test these drugs in early breast cancer. We are extremely hopeful based on some very promising early results that these drugs will quickly become established as a new standard of care and lead to improved cure rates for women with Triple Negative Breast Cancer.. With your efforts our unit, by helping to develop these drugs, will be able to help millions of women in the near future who like Sarah have Triple Negative Breast Cancer”.

Day 2 (3rd September 2010)

Here we are at the Dolmen Hotel, Carlow after another day of intrepid cycling.

Though slightly easier than our hellish day yesterday, we are still very stiff and sore!

We set off from Roscrea bright and early, dreading the headwinds which plagued us so yesterday.
Luckily they were nowhere near as strong, which meant the day was generally far easier, despite some tricky climbs that meant our sudcrem and lucozade snack stores were vastly depleted.

Of course, a day will not go by without a certain level of drama, such as Rory Boden's gears completely breaking only to be (luckily!) mended by Tom the magical mechanic.

So we all finished in higher spirits, though marred by the awful tumble Lizzie Christie-Miller took on the final descent which meant she sustained several injuries, and although she will be fine is spending the night in hospital. She will eb very much in our thoughts and give us the extra will and energy to complete what is looking like a very challenging final stage tomorrow in predicted foul weather up yet more HILLS!

Off to bed now for an inhuman 6.30 start tomorrow...

Day One (2nd September 2010)

Our first day of cycling has been a challenge to say the least!

We have all arrived safely at the Racket Hall Hotel, Roscrea, though not without a fair slice of dramas and obstacles along the way!

We set off slightly later than planned, due to a pair of keys that managed to hide themselves, undetected in Phil 'no gears' Deeker's own pocket! However we managed to all sweep out of Galway (complete with police escort!) only to quickly realise there were to be several setbacks....

Although we expected to be weary and in a certain amount of discomfort, none of us had quite anticipated the combination of factors that left us in such pain, despite the atypical glorious sunshine that seemed to be the only proof of the 'luck of the Irish'!

Our first opponent was the...interesting...road surface which made what could of been a simple stretch of road into an adventure filled with the fun of rattling jaws and swerves to avoid crater-like potholes!

Our other nemesis was the unbelievably powerful headwind that seemed determined to thwart us as we battled along, slowing us down to near comical speeds at times!

Of course, several of our dramas were due to human not elemental factors! Prime examples being Peter and Sophie as well as Charles and Vero's slight detours (and James Webb's near escape due to an inability to read signs...)

However, despite our weary state, we are determined to continue on this adventure tomorrow, lulled to sleep by the dulcet tones of traditional Irish music...

Until tomorrow!
